America in 1607: Jamestown and the Powhatan

This website has so much "stuff" that there is no way that I could explain everything it has to offer! You can explore Jamestown and the Werowocomoco Powhatan village. You can use a magnifying glass to look at an illustration, you can watch a "fly over" a computer rendering of what Jamestown and Werowocomoco looked like in the early 1600s (looks real), you can listen to interviews from historians, you can look at real artifacts that have been found, and more. Happy exploring!

The Jamestown Online Adventure

In this website, you have to make the same important decisions that the first colonists had to make. You have to decide where to land, how to interact with the natives, what to build, and more. Don't worry, though, because you will have the charter, the colonists, and the natives to advise you. Be careful, though. You do not have to take their advice if you do not think it is best. At the end, it will let you know how your colonists are doing based on your decisions and what really happened in Jamestown so that you can see if you did a better job than they did "back in the day."

  Fantastic Voyage

You have to choose the ship and the crew you would take to the new colony, and you have to make all the other decisions needed to guide the ship safely to the new colony. At the end, you will learn if your ship made it, how healthy everyone is, the morale of everyone, and if your colony is likely to survive. For each decision that you must make, there is a button that says, “Get More Info” that you can click to help you make your decision. Good Luck!

  Panoramic Views of Plymouth Colony

If you had traveled all the way across the ocean to a land with no buildings, towns, or equipment, you would have had to make your own home and to help make other buildings in town. The colonists of Plymouth Colony had to do just that. What do you think the buildings and town of Plymouth Colony looked like? With this website, you can see for yourself! Take a look at the “real” recreations of Plymouth Colony. Click and drag the video to explore different parts of each scene.

  Cottage Quest

This one is not really so much a game as it is a fun questionnaire that goes with the “Panoramic Views of Plymouth Colony” activity (above). Each question will describe a common item from the 17th century, and you have to pick the name of that item from the choices. Since you probably will not know what most of the items are, you will have to search in the buildings of Plymouth Colony - which are listed above each question. Most questions have a "Helpfull Hinte," which is how "helpful hint" used to be spelled, to give you clues of where to look for each item. Good luck!

  Apollo 11 Smithsonian IdeaLab

This IdeaLab is an interactive lab that has pictures, facts, and audio/video from 1969 as well as interviews conducted years later of Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and more.

Tips:
(1) In the bottom right, there is a bar that looks like one long picture, but it is actually six pictures next to each other. Each picture opens a section of the activity.
(2) For each activity, click the colored box with the title in it for audio/video (I almost missed this!), and THEN click "Learn More."
(3) Pay attention to the pictures in the "Explore Here" section of each activity. If there is a play button underneath, it will have audio/video - and a lot of it is from 1969.
(4) DO go to the "Try This" section because there are pictures, fun facts, and/or video in that section. One of them is a video of Buzz Aldrin making a sandwich in space.
