I made these reading
comprehension skill bookmarks in an effort to see my students' thinking
when reading "real" books - the books they choose to read on their own.
I tried to follow the format in The CAFE Book by Gail Boushey
and Joan Moser, or "The Sisters." I love the format that the sisters use
to teach kids to use literacy skills and the short one-on-one
conferences that are emphasized. However, when teaching 4th graders and
trying to implement the Scott Foresman program also, I felt that my
students needed something structured when documenting their thinking for
their target comprehension skills. These bookmarks are so general that
they can be used with any book at all.
I generally used this procedure when doing one-on-one bookmark
conferences (modified from the sister's version):
First Conference:
Show the student a list of comprehension skills (I usually just show
the ones that are going to be on the upcoming unit test.) Ask him/her to
tell one he/she can do well, and one he/she probably needs to practice.
Amazingly, students are usually right.
Give the student a bookmark for the skill they want to practice, and
explain that the bookmark will help him/her practice that skill.
Explain each part of the bookmark - even if a certain part seems
obvious. I found after using these bookmarks for a while that oftentimes
students did not know how to use a particular skill for the "little"
reasons adults find so "obvious."
Explain that the student can practice with any book he/she wants.
Ask how long he/she thinks it will take him/her to complete his/her
bookmark (or section of a bookmark. I usually just asked them to do half
at a time.)
Write the date that he/she agrees to commit to on a calendar in your
reading notebook (or where ever you keep reading data or notes) while
the student signs a promise log. I found they are more likely to have
the bookmark complete if they sign that they promise to have it
completed by a certain date.
Ask the student to bring the book he/she uses to complete his/her
bookmark with him/her on the scheduled day.
This all looks like a lot, but it all takes about 3-5 minutes.
Second Conference and Following Conferences:
Ask to see the bookmark; put it in a place so that both you and the
student can see it.
Go over each part that the student wrote (which is why I usually
only assign half at a time!), and ask the student to show
you where he/she found each answer in his/her book.
Try to emphasize that this process is providing evidence.
Correct misconceptions. There are usually several during this
conference. Do not take too long.
The next part of the conference and
following conferences can go one of two ways:
If there are several misconceptions,
correct a few, and then schedule to meet with that student the next day.
Write the appointment on your calendar. If the student had a lot of misconceptions, during the next
conference, complete a skill bookmark together with the book of the
student's choosing. Then, give the student a new bookmark of the same
skill and the one you did together. The student will practice the skill,
but will have the example you did together to refer to as necessary. Ask
the student how long it will take him/her to complete, schedule the date
in your calendar, and let him/her sign the promise log. Repeat this process until you feel he/she understands that skill!
If there are not many misconceptions,
let the student practice the next section of bookmark or another
bookmark of the same skill so that he/she can prove that he/she
understands the skill (usually takes 3-4 times.) Ask the student how
long it will take him/her to complete, schedule the date in your
calendar, and let him/her sign the promise log. Repeat
this process until you feel he/she understands that skill!
I
usually used these bookmarks for comprehension skill intervention.
I did use the bookmarks for enrichment sometimes also,
because it allowed me to see how well my advanced students could use
these comprehension skills on their challenge level. I usually only did
these 2-3 times a week, and I usually focused on 4-6 kids at a time.
I would have loved to have used more of these with more students. Most
of the students who got to do the bookmarks liked them, and we all
really enjoyed our one-on-one time together. These bookmarks more than
anything else I've used let me pinpoint exactly what was holding my
students back in specific skills. I started using them late in the year,
and I wish I had started using them when school started.
The comprehension skill sheets (above in the resources by story section)
is my attempt to tie bookmarks and story together on a regular basis.
This year I was going to try to discuss those skill sheets with each
group for a few minutes to get a general idea of how I could help my
students apply those skills readily and automatically.
I think the repetition of general skill application would have really
made an impact with my students this year. I was either going to
supplement with these bookmarks or use bookmarks only on review week (I
was just going to play it by ear!).
